Improve: Grading and Reporting
The central goal of proficiency-based learning is to make students’ areas of strength, progress, attainments and challenges more visible and clear to students, teachers, and family members. Schools work towards this goal in a variety of different ways, and each way has its challenges. In this session, we will first discuss a variety of strategies that different schools have adopted to ensure that their grades provide the most useful information. We will then make space for participants to present aspects of their system or challenges for feedback, suggestions, or resources from the group. All participants are encouraged to bring multiple copies of sample report card, transcript, sample gradebook, or the school grading guidelines to share and tune with others. Be sure to remove the student name or any other identifying information.

Improve: Planning for All Learners
A foundational belief of personalized, proficiency-based education is that all students have different backgrounds, strengths and weaknesses and it is the role of the teacher and school to help each student grow and learn while planning for these differences. This requires a range of differentiation strategies. This session will bring educators together to practice using probing questions and a consultancy protocol to improve our practices in this area.  Participants will leave with a set of resources that support planning differentiated approaches to teaching and learning.

Improve: Power of Clarifying Standards for Increasing Equity and Rigor in Assessments
Naugatuck, CT Public Schools are engaged in creating a K - 12 program that ensures equitable outcomes for all students through their approach to rigorous, competency based learning using NAUGATUCK PUBLIC SCHOOLS COMPETENCIES AND SCORING GUIDES FOR K-12.   Report cards have been revised at the K-6 level, assessments have been aligned to competencies, and that work is starting to inform middle and high school instruction.  This session will examine two middle school assessments (Grades 6 & 8), provide feedback to those assessments, and consider the implications for what high school assessments will look like that build on this K - 8 work.  This session will consider the role that assessment has in achieving equity.

Innovate: Grading and Reporting
As schools shift to a more personalized and proficiency-based system of teaching and learning, challenges to traditional grading and reporting practices often arise (e.g., missing work, increasing student voice and responsibility, involving our broader community in redesigning reporting systems, etc.). This session will use a design thinking process to generate possible approaches for addressing these challenges, framed as “How might we …?”  Participants will have the opportunity to either pose a design challenge they’re facing or participate as a member of a brainstorming group to generate possible solutions to the challenge presented.

Innovate: Sustainable School Leadership
School leadership is essential to the successful implementation of meaningful change and promoting equity within our communities. In this session, we will explore how we might design structures to promote sustainable school leadership to be able to see change efforts take root and improve student outcomes. We will introduce the ideas of Design Thinking and then use a process that starts with the prompt “How Might We?” that uses the collective thinking of the group to brainstorm and then develop concrete ideas that address the sustainability of leadership within your communities. You don’t need to bring anything to the session other than your interest in exploring action-based ideas for rethinking leadership in your school.
